The Sixth Sense
The Sixth Sense floor lamp is built around the concept of proprioception — the body’s ability to sense its own position and movement, helping a person navigate through space even without relying entirely on vision. This aspect of human perception became the foundation of the luminaire’s human-centered design. Its key features are a cross-shaped base that allows the lamp to be positioned very close to furniture, two independent light sources, and switches located directly above the shades at a comfortable height for a seated user.
During the development process, particular attention was paid to proprioception and tactile perception in everyday actions. This led to the idea of making the controls as simple and physically intuitive as possible, so that the user would not need to change posture, search for a switch, or interrupt an activity simply to control the light.
The cross-shaped base allows the floor lamp to be placed close to a desk, armchair, or other furniture and even positioned between objects. This geometry makes the luminaire more flexible and helps bring the light source exactly where it is needed.
The switches are positioned at the top of the luminaire, directly above the shades. Their height was calculated so that a seated person can switch on one or both light sources with a simple movement of the hand — for example, without lifting an elbow from the desk or looking away from a computer.
Special attention was also given to the tactile quality of the controls. The shape and mechanism of the switches were designed to make touching them pleasant while providing a clear, satisfying click. Interaction with the luminaire therefore involves not only vision but also touch and sound.
The construction combines LED sources, metal, and frosted glass. High-quality matte diffusers conceal the LEDs and produce soft, comfortable illumination.
For easier transportation, the floor lamp was designed as a dismountable structure. This helps protect it during delivery, reduce packaging volume, and use packaging materials more efficiently. After the first prototype, the originally planned glossy black finish was replaced with textured matte black, making the surface more pleasant to touch and more practical for everyday use.
The Sixth Sense combines functionality, ergonomics, and an exploration of human perception. Its concise form becomes an adaptive tool designed around natural human movements, making everyday interaction with light more intuitive.
